Traditional Awnings Handcrafted for your Shop, Hotel, Bar or Restaurant in the UK

Traditional awnings ideal for UK conservation areas

The Traditional Awning otherwise known as the Victorian Awning and sometimes called the British Awning, should correctly be referred to as the Box-Lot Awning. The traditional awning has gained recognition because it is the style of awning most commonly associated with shop, hotel and restaurant facades from the Victorian and Edwardian era. In fact, it is the only awning suitable for conservation areas of historical interest and is often viewed favourably by local conservation officers in planning applications. You can find examples of our traditional awnings in such architecturally important heritage areas as Greenwich, Richmond, Knightsbridge and Tunbridge Wells.

Strong, retractable awnings for the retail and hospitality sectors

The design and construction of our retractable ' Victorian Shop Awning' is beautifully simple yet exceptionally strong. The tailored steel arms support a durable canopy of acrylic canvas or PVC polyester (where a valance is required). We also provide the option of sliding arms to offer extended coverage, particularly useful for restaurants and cafes where al fresco diners can enjoy the benefits of our traditional awning's protection.

Corporate branding on traditional awnings

The canopy offers superb branding potential and our in-house experts can confidently match any corporate I.D. or logo associated with your business. Our studio is able to offer a wide range of graphic and logo treatments for your traditional awning including photographic printing should you require it.

Electrically powered retractable awnings

The classic design of the Victorian Awning means it can be fully retracted quickly and efficiently at the end of the business day - or should high winds or stormy conditions arise. However, the traditional awning can cope with most of the elements the Great British weather can throw at it, providing comfortable shade in summer and sheltered protection from rain or sleet in winter. Should you require a more effortless awning retraction, electrical motors can be supplied with a number of our designs.

Multiple, matching Victorian awnings for larger commercial premises

If you need an array of traditional awnings over a number of windows for your premises, common when supplying department store awnings, bar awnings and cafe canopies, we can also provide awning junction rollers. These are fitted between the awnings to create an area of continuous protection and coverage beneath.

Traditional awning construction

Our traditional awning is constructed by hand using the same proven techniques we have employed since the 1950s. The casing or 'box' of the box-lot is manufactured from FSA accredited hard wood which we then paint to match the facade of your business premises or stain to allow the true beauty of the wood to show through. We also fit sprung steel rollers as standard to ensure a smooth, effortless action.

London's Traditional Awning Specialists since 1956

Traditional Awnings have been designing, constructing and installing domestic and commercial awnings since we started trading in 1956. Our founder, Mr GH Morrison started producing traditional awnings for London businesses in tandem with the sails, tarpaulins and canvases he created for his customers on the bustling waterways around the Thames. Over the years, Traditional Awnings has continued to expand its operation across London and the UK with many prestigious projects to our name. These include the iconic shop awnings seen by the millions of tourists and shoppers who visit Harrods every year - as well as the our signature folding arm and sepele terrace awnings at The Ivy.
